What is the “Mark Sami”- adaptation?
In Troms and Nordland, the so-called Mark Sami culture is widespread. People who were forced out of reindeer herding due to plagues, diputes over grazing lands or other reasons, cleared small plots in the rangelands (“utmarka” in Norwegian), as the best agricultural land along the sea was already occupied. Small-scale agriculture and animal husbandry, accompanied by a varied use of local natural resources, formed the basis for this way of life. Seasonal work in the fisheries of Lofoten and Finnmark was important to many families.
