The unique geological resources of Senja first attracted international attention in the late 19th century. The Nickel Works in Hamn and the Graphite Works at Skaland are examples of the mining industry’s history in the region. Today, artefacts and photographs are preserved and displayed in the former municipal hall in Skaland.
Graphite mining is still going on a bit further north on the island.
