In the 18th and 19th centuries, descendants of reindeer herders from Sweden settled on the Norwegian side of the border. A bit inland from the already occupied seashore, they cleared plots of land and created a way of life based on small-scale livestock breeding and agriculture, seasonal fishing, and the extensive use of berries, building materials and other resources from the forest and the mountains. Kaperdalen is one of the best-preserved Sami settlements of this kind in Norway. It is well worth a visit.
